About Giuseppe

I am Giuseppe Di Martino. I am a psychodynamic psychologist and a registered hypnotherapist, and I have been thinking about the psychology of stories for longer than I have been practising clinically.

My route into this work was not a straight line. I trained as a psychologist and went deep into psychodynamic theory, attachment, and the clinical literature. Alongside that I read comics, I played games, and I paid close attention to how the people I cared about used stories to carry the things they could not yet say out loud. At some point it became obvious to me that these two parts of my life were the same project. The fiction was doing psychological work. The psychology was always, underneath, about the stories we tell.

I started bringing that integration into my clinical practice about six years ago. It changed what my sessions felt like. Clients stopped leaving half of themselves outside the room. We were able to get to material faster, and hold it more carefully, because we had a shared language for it.
